Performance Designs builds the Optimum from a 30 denier low-permeability, low-bulk fabric, then adds reserve-specific reinforcement and aerodynamics. In plain language: it is designed to pack smaller for its size, open promptly, fly predictably, and give you useful flare when the day has become very serious.

Think of the Optimum as the PD reserve for jumpers who do not want pack volume to be the reason they choose a smaller reserve than planned. It is still a reserve decision, not an accessory decision: choose the size that makes sense for your exit weight and container, then use stock availability to shorten the wait if you can.
The headline is low bulk. PD's 30 denier low-permeability fabric helps the canopy pack smaller than a conventional reserve of similar size. That can make tight trays easier, but it is not a magic bypass for the container chart; the person packing and signing the reserve should confirm the fit.
A reserve should not be exciting in the wrong way. PD describes the Optimum as opening promptly and smoothly, with more main-like flight, forgiving landings, and strong flare. That is useful if you ever need it, but size and loading still matter more than brochure confidence.

What makes the PD Optimum different?
The Optimum is PD's low-bulk reserve. It uses a 30 denier low-permeability fabric and reserve-specific construction so you can often keep a sensible reserve size without fighting as much pack volume. The appeal is simple: easier fit in many containers, with the flare and predictability people expect from PD.
Who should consider an Optimum reserve?
The Optimum makes the most sense when pack volume matters: smaller containers, tight reserve trays, or jumpers who do not want to downsize the reserve just to make the rig close nicely. If pack volume is not a problem, also compare the standard PD Reserve.
Can I order different color PD Optimum?
Not through this page. The Optimum here is ordered in PD's standard orange. If you need a different colour, contact us before ordering and we will check whether PD can supply it and what the lead time would be.
Should I buy stock or custom order?
Choose stock if your size is in stock and you need the canopy fast. If you are also ordering a container and the container will take longer than a custom reserve, custom usually makes more sense than buying stock and losing shelf life while you wait.
Does the Optimum pack smaller than a normal reserve?
Yes, compared with a conventional reserve of similar size, that is the point of the low-bulk fabric.
PD Reserve or PD Optimum - which should I choose?
The PD Reserve is the classic conventional PD reserve. The Optimum is the low-bulk PD reserve, designed around smaller pack volume and a more main-like flight feel. Choose Optimum when pack volume is a real constraint or you want that landing feel; choose PD Reserve when conventional pack volume is fine and familiarity is the priority.
How fast can an in-stock PD Optimum ship?
EU stock is usually around 1-2 weeks. U.S. stock is usually around 2-3 weeks, depending on shipping route and customs. We still confirm the exact stock item before committing the order, because PD stock can move quickly.
