The JYRO Petra is not an everyday sport canopy. It is JYRO’s full sail hyper-performance competition wing, created for expert swoop pilots who already live in the world of small, highly loaded crossbraced canopies and want the most powerful tool in the bag.

Petra reset expectations for canopy piloting with a very high roll rate, extremely long recovery arc, high maximal glide ratio and enormous power through the turn, plane-out and flare. It is built from the ground up around low drag, structural precision and competition-level efficiency.

Who it is for

  • Experienced competitive canopy pilots with thousands of jumps and proven high-performance currency.
  • Pilots already flying small, highly loaded crossbraced canopies under active coaching.
  • Swoopers who need a specialist tool for maximum distance, speed and power.
  • Not suitable for everyday jumping, low-time jumpers or pilots without coach confirmation.

Flight character

Petra is extremely fast and reactive. Harness, toggles, fronts and rears all require subtle, disciplined inputs. Openings are firm but not hard, and JYRO notes that terminal openings are brisk but manageable for the intended pilot. Once in flight, the canopy accelerates quickly, dives very long and steep, and requires pilot input to return to level flight.

Rears have huge range and power. Front risers are light and easy to manipulate, even from full drive. Toggle response is highly sensitive, especially at higher wing loadings, and abrupt inputs can create serious high-speed stall risk. Flare is very powerful, but Petra expects the pilot to be current, coached and precise.

Design features

  • S²-PU sail fabric uses high-modulus 30-denier silicone/polyurethane-coated nylon for structural integrity and dimensional stability.
  • 3D CAD shaping and CFD testing produce accurate panels, smoother surfaces and better understanding of turbulence and recovery.
  • Powerband leading edge controls nose shape, reduces drag and helps delay the stall.
  • Mini-ribs sharpen the trailing edge and reduce drag.
  • No-stabiliser end-cell design was a breakthrough JYRO innovation to reduce induced drag.
  • Elliptical crossports reduce upper-surface distortion while supporting chamber airflow.
  • FailSmart line reinforcement strengthens critical A1 line areas on V400/V300 line sets.

Options and suitability

SkydiveShop currently lists the correct Petra sizes 55, 57, 61, 65, 71, 77, 83 and 89, with Vectran 400 or Vectran 300 line options and combined Bridle and RDS choices. JYRO lists Petra wing loading guidance around 2.5–3.0+. Manufacturer text positions Petra as an RDS-oriented competition canopy; select the exact Bridle/RDS configuration in the options and confirm details before ordering.

Competition configuration notes

JYRO’s manufacturer page states Petra comes standard with an RDS and spare lineset. SkydiveShop currently models Petra with separate Bridle/RDS configuration choices so the order can reflect the exact setup required. Before applying a future Shopify update, it may be worth confirming how we want to present this commercially: strict manufacturer-standard configuration only, or the current selectable configuration for special-order handling.

Line choice is also part of the performance and maintenance decision. Vectran 300 and 400 are specialist choices for a specialist canopy; drag, durability, reline interval and pilot preference all matter. This should be confirmed with the pilot, coach and manufacturer/dealer ordering process.

Ordering and readiness notes

Petra should be sold with a suitability conversation, not as a casual add-to-cart canopy. JYRO’s guidance includes high wing loading, recent competition/currency and coach/reference expectations. If a pilot does not have a coach to confirm readiness, that is already the answer. For the right pilot, Petra is extraordinary; for anyone else, it is the wrong tool.

Before you order

Canopy descriptions are useful, but they do not replace a real suitability check. Your exit weight, currency, landing area, container compatibility, previous canopy history and coaching plan all matter. If you are between sizes or moving into a new performance class, get confirmation from a qualified canopy coach or rigger before placing the order. That keeps the purchase aligned with how you actually fly, not just how good the spec sheet looks.
