PD Sabre 3 Main Canopy

The Performance Designs Sabre 3 is a modern everyday main canopy for jumpers who want smooth, confidence-inspiring openings, responsive handling, efficient glide, and dependable flare power in one versatile 9-cell wing.

It keeps the familiar Sabre family character but refines the flight experience for today's sport skydiver: cleaner heading control, useful harness and toggle response, strong rear-riser drive, and a powerful bottom-end flare when flown correctly.

Sized conservatively, it can support long-term progression for newer licensed jumpers. Loaded higher, it becomes a sharper, faster canopy with a longer recovery arc and more performance to manage.

Performance Designs Sabre 3

A universal canopy with real personality

The Sabre 3 is very universal. In a bigger size it can be a great first personal canopy. Loaded higher, it wakes up: sharper turns, more speed, a nicer dive and a real path toward high-performance canopies.

After opening it has forward drive and feels connected, not sleepy. Toggles give a clean answer, fronts build a useful dive, rears keep driving, and the flare has real power when you finish it properly.

For newer licensed jumpers, choose a conservative size with a coach or instructor. The same Sabre 3 can feel friendly as a 170 and much more serious as a 120.

Fly before you buy

Try a PD canopy before committing

Choosing the right Sabre 3 is easier when you have actually flown one. Performance Designs' demo program lets you jump a PD canopy before ordering, so you can feel the openings, glide, recovery arc, flare, and overall handling in real conditions.

If you are changing canopy model, wing loading, or considering downsizing, demoing the same size first is strongly recommended.

Sabre 3 questions

PD Sabre 3 FAQ

Answers to the questions jumpers usually ask before choosing a Sabre 3: openings, sizing, Sabre 2 differences, demoing, stock vs custom, and progression.

Is the PD Sabre 3 a good first canopy?

The Sabre 3 can be a great first personal canopy for some licensed jumpers, but only when the size, wing loading, and jumper experience make sense. It is not a student canopy, but many jumpers buying their first rig already have 50-100+ jumps and are ready for their first own main canopy. If you are buying your first main, confirm the size with your instructor, canopy coach, or contact us and we will help you choose the right option.

What size Sabre 3 should I buy?

The right Sabre 3 size depends on your exit weight, current canopy, jump numbers, landing consistency, currency, drop zone conditions, and progression goals. The same Sabre 3 can feel very different at different wing loadings, so there is no universal best size. If you are changing model or downsizing, we strongly recommend demoing the same size first and confirming the choice with a qualified canopy coach or instructor.

What are the Sabre 3 openings like?

The Sabre 3 is known for clean, comfortable openings with good heading control. Most jumpers experience it as a canopy that opens on heading with a nice, positive deployment. If you are moving from canopies such as the Safire, S-Fire, or Helium, you may notice that the Sabre 3 opens a little sharper and completes the opening sequence faster. Like any main canopy, the final opening feel still depends on packing, body position, deployment speed, line condition, slider behavior, and wing loading.

How does the Sabre 3 compare to the Sabre 2?

The Sabre 3 is the modern evolution of the Sabre 2. It keeps the familiar all-round Sabre character, but refines the openings, heading control, responsiveness, glide, and performance range. For many Sabre 2 jumpers, the Sabre 3 feels like a cleaner, more modern version.

Who is the Sabre 3 best for?

The Sabre 3 is best for sport skydivers who want one versatile main canopy for regular fun jumping, progression, and long-term skill development. Sized conservatively, it can feel approachable and confidence-inspiring. Loaded higher, it becomes faster, more responsive, and more demanding, so the right fit depends heavily on the pilot and wing loading.

Can I demo a Sabre 3 before buying?

Yes. Performance Designs offers a demo program in the United States and Europe that lets jumpers fly a PD canopy before ordering. Demoing is especially useful if you are unsure between sizes, changing from another canopy model, or thinking about downsizing. View the PD demo program.

Is the Sabre 3 good for progressing toward higher-performance canopy flight?

Yes, when sized and flown appropriately. The Sabre 3 has enough performance range to support progression, including more responsive turns, useful front-riser input, rear-riser drive, a reasonably long recovery arc, and strong flare power. It is still not a shortcut around canopy coaching. If your goal is high-performance landings or downsizing, work with a qualified canopy coach. You can also find canopy training resources at CanopyFlightSchool.com.

What sizes does the Sabre 3 come in?

The PD Sabre 3 is available in 89, 97, 107, 120, 135, 150, 170, 190, 210, and 230 sq ft. The model covers a wide range of pilots, but the same canopy behaves very differently depending on size and wing loading.

Should I buy a stock or custom Sabre 3?

Choose a stock Sabre 3 if the correct size and configuration are available and you want the fastest delivery. Choose a custom Sabre 3 if you want to select your own PD color layout and factory configuration. Custom orders are built to your selected specification, so size, colors, and options should be checked carefully when ordering.

What size slider does the PD Sabre 3 use?

The PD Sabre 3 slider depends on the canopy size and factory configuration. Listed Sabre 3 slider options include 23 x 31 collapsible slider with snaps and stainless hardware, and 12.5 x 35.25 dome, collapsible slider with snaps and stainless hardware. If you are replacing a slider or ordering a specific configuration, the slider must match the exact Sabre 3 size and PD factory specification. Contact us before ordering if you are unsure.

Is the Sabre 3 a wingsuit canopy?

The Sabre 3 is not marketed as a dedicated wingsuit canopy. Some jumpers may use it for certain wingsuit setups, but if wingsuiting is a main part of your jumping, canopy choice becomes more specific. In that case, speak with a wingsuit instructor, canopy coach, rigger, or contact us before choosing the canopy.

How long does it take to deliver a stock Sabre 3?

If the correct Sabre 3 is available from stock, delivery is usually much faster than a custom order. European stock canopies usually deliver in about 1-2 weeks, while U.S. stock canopies usually take around 2-3 weeks depending on availability, shipping route, and customs.

How long does it take to manufacture a custom Sabre 3?

A custom PD Sabre 3 is made to order by Performance Designs. The current production time is 12-18 weeks. This can change depending on PD's current production queue, and we will confirm the expected lead time when placing or reviewing your order.
