The JYRO Tandem is the wing that helped launch the brand: a durable, proven tandem main built for commercial operations that need reliability, instructor confidence and passenger-friendly landings. It traces its roots to the original Icarus Tandem, the first zero-porosity tandem canopy released to the market, and continues that legacy with modern JYRO materials and design refinements.

For a busy DZ, a tandem canopy is not a toy. It is a working tool that needs to open well, fly predictably, tolerate high use and still give instructors enough control authority to put passengers down comfortably. The JYRO Tandem is built around exactly that balance: strong construction, low malfunction reputation, efficient glide and landings that feel more like a large sport canopy than a reluctant bus.

Who it is for

  • Commercial tandem operations that need durable, high-use main canopies.
  • Tandem instructors who value soft openings, reliable heading behaviour and responsive controls.
  • Dropzones that want strong investment value and long-lasting ZP performance.
  • Operations looking for size options across different passenger weights, climates and landing areas.

Flight character

JYRO describes the openings as soft, consistent and comfortable, typically taking around 500–700 ft. The canopy opens centre-cell first, with the ends collapsed and the remaining cells inflating slowly. There are no brake settings, simplifying packing and allowing useful flexibility in the control system.

In flight, the JYRO Tandem is responsive and familiar for instructors used to large sport canopies. Dual or single toggle setups provide a wide control range, with light steering effort and strong flare authority. The deep stall point gives confidence when holding in brakes or stacking for landing, while the glide helps with longer spots and the elliptical planform keeps the wing agile enough to be enjoyable.

Design features

  • Full ZP construction with JYRO’s J-ZP fabric for long service life and retained performance.
  • Elliptical planform gives responsive, intuitive handling.
  • No brake setting design simplifies packing and supports easy post-opening turns.
  • Control system options allow different brake-line setups for operational preference.
  • Collapsible slider reduces drag and distraction after opening.
  • Industrial Vectran lines come standard for durability and value.

Options and suitability

SkydiveShop currently lists sizes 300, 330, 364 and 400. JYRO notes standard sizes around 300, 330 and 364, with other sizes available for specific operational needs. Tandem canopy selection should be made by the DZ, tandem examiner, rigger or equipment manager responsible for the operation.

Operational value

For tandem operations, the best canopy is not only the one that feels good on a demo jump. It is the one instructors trust after hundreds of openings, the one packers can handle consistently, and the one that keeps passenger landings predictable across changing winds, weights and DZ pace. JYRO designed the Tandem around that commercial reality.

The no-brake-setting concept is especially practical in a working environment. It simplifies the packing flow and allows pilots with handicam to turn after opening without needing to release both brakes first. The optional control-system setups let operations choose the handling feel that best matches instructor preference and landing style.

Size and ordering notes

JYRO lists a broad size range with standard and non-standard options, while SkydiveShop currently carries the main sizes used by many operations. Choose size based on passenger profile, DZ conditions, equipment system and examiner/rigger guidance. Tandem mains are operational equipment; final selection should be made by the person responsible for the tandem programme.

Before you order

Canopy descriptions are useful, but they do not replace a real suitability check. Your exit weight, currency, landing area, container compatibility, previous canopy history and coaching plan all matter. If you are between sizes or moving into a new performance class, get confirmation from a qualified canopy coach or rigger before placing the order. That keeps the purchase aligned with how you actually fly, not just how good the spec sheet looks.
